Born in 1975 in Dingshu Town, Wu Yunfeng 吴云峰 entered the No.1 Yixing Purple Clay Factory in 1992 to learn purple clay craftsmanship, with a specialty in pure hand-making. In 2006, at the "First Yixing Purple Clay All-Handicraft Skills Competition," he was awarded the title of "Outstanding Inheritor of Yixing Purple Clay Pottery." In 2015, his work "Sand-Pottery Ru-Style Teapot" won a silver prize in the "Jingzhou Cup" 景舟杯 Teapot Making Competition during the 8th China • Yixing International Ceramic Culture and Art Festival.
Wu Yunfeng’s studio sits in a quiet place, unassuming yet carrying a calm strength. In front of the door, a piece of rugged stone rests in a plain white trough, evoking a natural, harmonious spirit. Upon entering, the workspace and reception area are subtly separated by a latticed window, ensuring both focused tranquility for creation and comfortable space for conversation, showing thoughtful design and taste.
His journey in purple clay began with family influence. His ancestors were well-known kiln owners in the area, and his uncle worked at the Jiangsu Yixing Purple Clay Craft Factory. In 1992, right after graduating from school, Wu joined Yixing Jinda Ceramics Co., Ltd. to learn purple clay techniques. With a solid foundation and strong learning ability, he has actively explored the dimensions of purple clay art in his creations.
Wu’s work covers a wide range, especially excelling in square-shaped teapots, while also achieving remarkable skill in flower-themed and plain vessels. Each piece carries unique aesthetics and thought, with an emphasis on line-surface transitions, using square to shape roundness, and roundness to soften squareness. His square vessels cleverly apply "small rounded corners" at surface junctions, making the rigid square forms feel warm and smooth. A fresh approach that has inspired new perspectives among purple clay enthusiasts.
In terms of form language, Wu dares to break traditional boundaries, following a path of "unusual, simple, weighty, and sharp." His works often abandon rigid symmetry, using bold, clear compositions with strategic cuts and shifts to create a "pure, unpolished" innocence and a "wind-swept grass" crispness. The lines are rich in meaning, now sharply assertive, now softly adaptable, condensing substance, hiding valleys and rivers, combining upright strength with winding rhythm.
Wu’s creations embody the restrained expression of Eastern aesthetics, focusing on the ordered beauty of points, lines, and surfaces, using elements like stone and bamboo as emotional carriers. Behind each piece lies his life experiences, emotional resonance, and responses to the world, evoking reflection in viewers and allowing purple clay art to transcend form and truly touch the heart.

"String-Confucius Square Teapot": Composed of six full, crisp triangular facets forming a harmonious organic whole, it breaks the rigid symmetry of traditional square teapots. The handle and body echo each other like taut strings, poised and ready, showing a free and modern aesthetic that brings new artistic values to purple clay.

The square shape embodies the wish for "peace in all directions," while the imagery of the "sheep" (or "ram") implies good fortune.
