Born in 1968 in Yixing, the Pottery Capital, Fan Jianrong was admitted to the Zisha Craft Factory in 1986. With conscientious training and a solid foundation in basic skills, he passed the examination to enter the Research Institute in 1989, and in 1990 served as an assistant instructor for a Zisha training class. To further enhance his artistic sensibility and design capability, in 1996 he became a disciple of Ji Yishun, a Chinese Ceramic Art Master and Jiangsu Provincial Master of Arts and Crafts.
Under his master’s meticulous guidance and by absorbing his master’s spiritual insight into the art of teapot making, Fan greatly advanced his design approaches and creative techniques. He is equally accomplished in plain-surface teapots, flower-decorated teapots, and ribbed teapots. His works have been published in professional magazines many times, and several of them have won gold awards in national (state-level) arts and crafts competitions. He is now a core creator at “Ji Chang Yuan” (Ji’s Enchanting Garden) and an outstanding inheritor of the Ji Yishun school of teapot art. His works are highly praised by artists and collectors at home and abroad, and many fine pieces have been collected by domestic and overseas collectors.
