The Classic "Duo Qiu" Teapot: A Masterpiece of Zisha Art

For centuries, Zisha teapots have been cherished.
Some works have been passed down through generations.
They are celebrated for their craftsmanship and innovation.
Among them, the "Duo Qiu" teapot stands out as an icon.

At the Yixing Ceramics Museum, three versions are displayed:

  • "Da Heng Duo Qiu"

  • "You Ting Duo Qiu"

  • "Shou Zhen Duo Qiu"

Each made by a legendary master.
Each representing a unique style from a different era.

Da Heng Duo Qiu

Created by Shao Daheng during the Jia-Dao period of the Qing Dynasty.
His teapot reflects grandeur and vitality.
Daheng was known for his pride and integrity.
He never bowed to authority or followed trends.

A famous story about him:
His teapots were priceless.
A maid faced death for breaking one owned by a noble.
To save her, Daheng brought a basket of his teapots to the noble.
He gave them all for free and left without a word.
His teapot, like his character, feels noble and free.

You Ting Duo Qiu

Made by Shao Youting during the Tongzhi-Guangxu period.
His design inherited Daheng’s boldness but added innovation.
He raised the neck, straightened the spout, and enlarged the lid.
The knob became rounder, making the teapot more spherical.

Youting’s version is a creative evolution.
It bridges Daheng’s classic and Shou Zhen’s refined styles.

Shou Zhen Duo Qiu

Cheng Shouzhen, Youting’s adopted son, focused on simplicity.
He perfected the "Duo Qiu" design.
His teapot features three overlapping spheres:
The knob, lid, and body unite in harmony.

It is the ultimate expression of the "Duo Qiu" concept.
Many say Shouzhen made the teapot truly "perfect and iconic."
