Born in 1963 in Yixing, the “Ceramic Capital,” Zhang Haiping (张海平) graduated from Jiangsu Yixing Light Industry School and furthered his studies at Nanjing University of the Arts. He apprenticed under Master Lü Yaochen, a renowned Chinese Craft Art Master.
Through years of systematic training in professional art education, the devoted guidance of his mentor, and his own earnest dedication and diligent exploration, Zhang has not only mastered proficient and solid skills in Zisha clay crafting but also inherited the exquisite and unique layered-clay decoration technique of the Lü School. In 2002, he founded his personal Zisha art studio, “Tian Bao Zhai.”
His Zisha works capture both form and spirit, presenting in spatial art a beauty of simplicity, elegance, antiquity, and subtlety. Multiple works have received top awards in arts and crafts exhibitions and are housed in provincial and municipal museums. In 2002, his work Chinese Spirit won the Gold Prize at the East China Arts and Crafts Fine Arts Exhibition. In 2006, the State Post Bureau issued postcards featuring his works. In 2009, pieces such as Natural Harmony were selected for the “New China National Gift Artists Exhibition” and recommended to be selected as national diplomatic gifts.
