Yuan Guoqiang

Born in 1970 in Yixing, the historic capital of Chinese pottery, Yuan Guoqiang 袁国强 grew up immersed in the rich tradition of purple clay ceramics. Coming from a family with deep roots in Zisha craftsmanship, he began his professional journey in 1987 and has since devoted more than thirty years to the creation and design of Zisha teapots.

In the late 1980s, Yuan had the privilege of studying under two legendary masters—He Daohong 何道洪 and Zhang Qingchen 张庆臣 —where he acquired the full repertoire of handcrafting techniques. This rigorous training laid the foundation for his exceptional technical proficiency, making him one of the most comprehensively skilled ceramic artists in the field.

Yuan’s artistic philosophy goes beyond mere form. His works are celebrated for their lasting appeal—the more you look, the more you discover a subtle charm that can only be described as “spiritual resonance” (shenyun). What distinguishes his creations is not just their distinctive shapes, but the deeper artistic sensibility that infuses each piece with a unique personality. He respects the thousand‑year‑old language of Zisha while infusing it with his own unpretentious yet persistent pursuit of excellence. The result is a body of work that is deeply traditional yet refreshingly elegant and contemporary.

His teapot designs are notably robust, dignified, and meticulously crafted, with a strong sense of dynamic tension and profound mood. He excels particularly in two classic genres: the ribbed (jinnang) vessels, which demonstrate exquisite precision and refined grace, and the plain (guangsu) vessels, which are rounded, solid, and full of inner vitality. Every teapot embodies hours of thoughtful deliberation and original ingenuity.

Yuan’s outstanding artistry has earned him numerous accolades, including Silver Award at the China Ceramic Art Exhibition, Gold and Silver Awards at the 2008 and 2009 Jiangsu Art Expo Cup, Gold and Silver Awards at the Golden Key Cup Fine Teapot Design Competition, Silver Award at the National Arts and Crafts Expo, and the Gold Award at the Jingzhou Cup during the 8th China · Yixing International Ceramic Culture Festival. His works have been permanently collected by prestigious institutions such as the China Jingdezhen Modern Ceramics Museum, Guangxi Yulin Museum, China Yixing Ceramics Museum, Jiangxi Provincial Museum, Yunnan Nationalities Museum, and Hainan Provincial Museum.

Beyond his creative practice, Yuan is also dedicated to education. He serves as an instructor at Yixing Vocational High School and Yixing Dingshu Adult School, and is a visiting professor at Wuxi Institute of Light Industry Technology. He is a member of the Jiangsu Provincial Ceramic Art Committee, a distinguished member of the China Photographers Association, and has been honored as an Outstanding Young Ceramic Artist of Yixing and a Famous Yixing Pottery Maker.

In 2023, he was officially recognized as a Jiangsu Provincial Ceramic Art Master (3rd session), and he also won the Gold Award in the Senior Professional Category at the first Jingzhou Cup Teapot Making Competition. With his unwavering dedication and boundless creativity, Yuan Guoqiang continues to push the boundaries of Zisha art, earning him a revered place among contemporary ceramic masters.
