Born in 1945 into a renowned pottery family in Yixing, Gu Shaopei began his artistic journey in 1958 at the Yixing Zisha (Purple Clay) Middle School under the guidance of Professor Pan Chunfang. Later, he apprenticed under the esteemed master Chen Fuyuan at the Yixing Zisha Pottery Factory and received long-term mentorship from the legendary potter Gu Jingzhou. With over 50 years of dedication to Zisha art, he has deeply studied the techniques of various masters, integrating their essence into his unique artistic style.

Gu has created more than 100 original works, earning prestigious awards such as:

  • Gold Medal at the Leipzig International Fair (Germany)

  • Golden Cup Award at the China National Hundred Flowers Arts and Crafts Competition

  • Gold Medal at the 1st China Arts and Crafts Huayi Cup

  • Over 20 provincial and national-level arts and crafts awards

In 1985, he was honored with the title "National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Worker" and the "May 1st Labor Medal" by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions. He has participated in numerous cultural and academic exchanges on Zisha art in Japan, the U.S., Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Throughout his career, Gu has held key positions, including:

  • Deputy Director of the Yixing Zisha Pottery Factory Research Institute

  • Deputy Chief Art Designer of the Yixing Zisha Pottery Factory

  • Chief Art Designer of Yixing Jinda Pottery Art Co., Ltd.
    Currently, he serves as:

  • Committee Member of the China Yixing Zisha Museum Appraisal Committee

  • Deputy Chief Art Designer of Yixing Fangyuan Zisha Pottery Co., Ltd.

In November 2006, he was awarded the title of "Master of Chinese Arts and Crafts" by the National Development and Reform Commission. In 2008, he was recognized as a "Representative Inheritor of Jiangsu Intangible Cultural Heritage."
