Born in 1962 into a family of ceramic artists in Dingshu Town, Yixing, Jiangsu, Fan (范建军) began his artistic training in 1979 under the renowned ceramic carving master Tan Yaokun. In 1980, he joined the Yixing Zisha (Purple Clay) Craft Factory and apprenticed with Bao Zhiqiang, a National Master of Arts and Crafts, where he systematically studied calligraphy, painting, and Zisha carving techniques. Through diligent practice and exploration, he gradually developed his own distinctive carving style, characterized by skilled knife work and fluid, graceful lines.

From 1982 to 1983, he furthered his education at the Modeling Department of Wuxi Institute of Light Industry, specializing in ceramic design and decoration. In 1988, after graduating from the Wuxi Light Industry Workers' University with a major in Decorative Arts, he returned to work at the Zisha Craft Factory’s research institute. There, under the guidance of his mother, Cao Wanfen (a National Master of Ceramic Art), he delved deeply into the design and creation of Zisha ware, significantly advancing his professional expertise.

Fan’s works are known for their rich themes and diverse decorative techniques. While honoring traditional forms, many of his pieces are creatively inspired, often infused with the poetic elegance of classical Chinese literature.
