How to Clean a Yixing Teapot (Purple Clay Teapot)
Cleaning a Yixing teapot (also known as a zisha or purple clay teapot) requires special care to avoid damaging the pot or affecting the flavor of your tea. Below are the proper cleaning steps and important tips for keeping your teapot in excellent condition.
Daily Cleaning Steps
1. Discard the leaves promptly
After each tea session, immediately empty the used tea leaves and any remaining tea liquor. Leaving wet leaves in the pot can encourage bacteria growth and cause unwanted odors.
2. Rinse with warm water
Rinse both the inside and outside of the teapot using warm water. Pay special attention to areas where residue easily builds up, such as the spout, the handle, and the joints where the handle meets the body. You can use a soft tea brush to gently wipe away any remaining tea stains.
3. Dry thoroughly and air-dry
Wipe the exterior of the pot dry with a clean tea cloth. Then place the teapot upside down and rest the lid on its side in a well-ventilated area, allowing it to air-dry naturally. This prevents water from pooling inside the pot.
Cleaning Special Situations
Removing heavy tea stains
If thick tea scale has accumulated inside the pot, you can use a soft-bristle brush and edible baking soda. Put an appropriate amount of baking soda into the pot, fill it with warm water, and let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Afterwards, gently scrub with the soft brush. The tea stains will gradually dissolve and loosen. Once clean, rinse thoroughly with warm water.
Eliminating odors
If the teapot has absorbed undesirable odors, fill it with boiling water, swirl the water gently, and then pour it out. Repeat this process several times to help remove any lingering smells.
Important Precautions
-
Avoid chemical cleaners
Do not use dish soap, toothpaste, or other chemical detergents. These substances can clog the microscopic pores of the purple clay, reducing its breathability. They may also leave behind chemical residues that affect the taste of your tea. -
Do not use abrasive tools
Never scrub your teapot with steel wool, stiff-bristle brushes, or other hard cleaning tools. They can scratch the surface and damage the natural texture of the purple clay. -
Never force-dry or expose to direct sun
After washing, always let the teapot air-dry naturally in a ventilated place. Avoid direct sunlight and high-temperature drying (such as with a hairdryer or oven), as rapid thermal expansion and contraction can cause the teapot to crack.
With proper cleaning and consistent care, your Yixing teapot will not only remain clean and hygienic but will also gradually develop a warm, lustrous patina, greatly enhancing your tea-drinking experience.
