Yixing purple clay (zisha clay), mined in Dingshu Town, Yixing, is renowned for its geological origin, mineral composition, physical structure, functional performance, and aesthetic value.
Geological and Mineral Composition
It is a naturally formed argillaceous siltstone, created over hundreds of millions of years through sedimentation, hydrothermal alteration, and weathering. Its mineral content, quartz (structure and sandy texture), kaolinite (plasticity), mica (lubrication and sheen), and iron oxides (color), is perfectly balanced, allowing it to be used alone without additives.
Unique Dual‑Pore Structure
Firing produces a dual‑pore system: open pores between aggregates allow air exchange, while closed pores within aggregates block water penetration, making the clay breathable yet leak‑proof. This structure preserves tea aroma and enhances flavor, earning it the title of "the world's finest teaware." The pores also adsorb and slowly release fragrances, enriching the brew.


Workability and Practical Performance
The clay is highly plastic with a low shrinkage rate (~10%), enabling complex shaping without cracking. Its quartz content ensures low thermal expansion and moderate heat conduction, making teapots comfortable to hold. High iron content yields varied fired colors, purple, red, brown, yellow, green, with a warm, matte finish.

In Use
Over time, tea oils penetrate the pores, forming a jade‑like patina that deepens with use. The slight breathability softens water and fully brings out the tea's color, aroma, and taste.
Aesthetic Appeal
Natural sand grains create a distinctive textured surface, feeling both rough and smooth. The inherent tones are subdued and elegant, with a matte luster reminiscent of antique jade.
