Born in 1965 into a family of pottery artisans in Yixing, Wu Shuying（吴淑英）graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Nanjing Normal University. She began her career at the Dingshu Purple Clay Craft Factory and later worked at the Yixing Purple Clay Craft Factory, specializing in the design and creation of purple clay teaware. With dedicated research into clay materials, she is known for her selective and refined use of clays. She co-authored the publication History of Yixing Purple Clay.
In 2006, she was commissioned to create six ceremonial purple clay teapots as national gifts for the 9th World Aerobic Championships, bringing honor to Yixing’s purple clay tradition. Over ten of her works have received gold awards in domestic and international exhibitions. Among them, Broad-Mindedness, Ripples, and Three Friends of Winter have been included in primary, secondary, and vocational school textbooks.
Her works are held in the collections of the China Purple Clay Museum, the Capital Museum in Beijing, and the Korean Ceramic Cultural Museum.
Artistic Characteristics:
Her designs emphasize clean, flowing forms and the flexible use of lines, achieving harmony among points, lines, planes, and volumes. She is committed to following the path of the “scholar-artist,” integrating literary cultivation with artistic practice.
