Shen Xi, courtesy name Ziyi 子贻, was a celebrated master of purple clay (zisha) teapot making active during the Daoguang and Xianfeng reigns of the Qing dynasty. Hailed by later generations as "the Guangling Swan Song" — an epithet signifying peerless and unmatched artistry — he stands as one of the most important representatives of late-Qing purple clay art.

Devoted wholeheartedly to the craft of teapot making, Shen Xi possessed a comprehensive mastery of techniques. He excelled in crafting square-shaped ware, round ware, floral ware, ribbed ware, and refined scholarly studio objects, and was particularly renowned for his square pieces. His works are distinguished by crisp, upright lines and a vigorous, robust dynamism.

Shen Xi skillfully employed white clay (benshan lüni, a local pale-green clay) and duan clay. He frequently collaborated with literati such as Qu Ziye and Zhu Shimei (Zhu Shimei), integrating poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal carving into teapot art, thereby significantly advancing the development of the "literati teapot."

His pieces most often bear a small impressed seal reading "Shen Xi," and the base is frequently marked with a square seal in seal script reading "Cha shu xiang wen" (Tea Ripens, Fragrance Warms) — a distinctive hallmark that has become essential for authenticating his genuine works.

Although his surviving masterpieces are rare, they possess extraordinarily high artistic value. Representative works include the Ziyi stone-ladle teapot (inscribed by Qu Ziye), the Han Jun teapot, the square teapot, and the well-curb teapot with colored clay relief decoration.

One of the most legendary of these is the "Four-Perfection Stone-Ladle Teapot": the body made by Shen Xi, the inscription carved by Qu Ziye, and the lid expertly refitted by Gu Jingzhou in 1992. Bringing together the mastery of three great masters in a single work, this teapot sold at auction in 2012 for 3.68 million RMB, becoming a fabled masterpiece in the history of purple clay art
