Born in 1955, Jiang Yan (蒋彦) joined the Yixing Zisha Pottery Factory in 1972, where he apprenticed under the renowned artisans Wang Yinchun, Lü Yaochen, and Li Bifang, the Chinese Master of Arts and Crafts, as well as the Jiangsu Master of Arts and Crafts. He studied traditional forms and design under their guidance.

He later attended the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts (now the Ceramics Department of Tsinghua University) three times to further his studies in design and theory.
