First thing to remember: no single test is foolproof. You have to put a few together to get a reliable answer.

  1. Start with the colour and surface.

A genuine Yixing pot has a muted, comfortable matte finish, nothing flashy. Purple clay looks a bit greyish, purple, red clay is a dark brick red, and duan ni is a soft beige‑yellow. The colour isn't perfectly even; it shifts slightly across the pot, and that's natural. But if you see glaring red, shiny bright blue, or a varnished, lacquer‑like gloss, it's almost certainly a fake with chemical dyes.

Now look closer. Real pots have a fine sandy texture. Under a bright light, you'll see tiny sparkles (that's mica) and little black specks (iron particles) scattered around unevenly, that's a good sign. Fakes are either glass‑smooth or powdery fine, with no visible grains or sparkles at all.

  1. Next, feel it.

A genuine pot feels warm and smooth, with a slight grippy texture, like very fine sandpaper, but not scratchy. Fakes are either slippery or rough and dry, with none of that pleasant warmth. Also check the weight: a real pot has a solid, balanced heft, it feels substantial but not overly heavy. Slip‑cast fakes tend to be unnaturally heavy (and feel "dead" heavy), while cheap ones feel too light.

  1. Give it a tap.

Gently tap the lid knob against the body. A real pot gives a dull, deep thud, like tapping a tile or a stone, with a slight sandy ring to it. Fakes (especially those with added glass or glaze) produce a sharp, high‑pitched clink, like porcelain, and the sound seems hollow. You can also rub the lid edge lightly against the rim, real ones have a clear, consistent sound, while fakes might sound muffled or uneven. (Note: Do this extremely gently to avoid chipping the clay, especially with lighter, thinner pots like Zhuni.)

  1. Pour hot water over it.

Dry the pot inside and out, then pour boiling water over the surface (or fill it with hot water). A real pot, thanks to its breathable double‑pore structure, absorbs water quickly. The water spreads into an even film and soaks in, it won't bead up and roll off. Fakes don't absorb water; the water sits in beads or pools and just stays there. While it's still hot, give it a sniff. A new genuine pot has a faint earthy smell (or sometimes none at all), if you get a sharp chemical or plastic odour, that's a sure sign of additives.

  1. Flip it over and check the inside and the details.

For a fully hand‑made pot, the inner wall shows traces of the clay‑slab joining, natural wrinkles, uneven ridges, and a slightly loose, irregular texture. If the inside is completely smooth, or has neat, concentric rings, it's likely slip‑cast. Also, for slip‑cast pots, there's often a small hole or dent on the inner wall right where the handle sits on the outside, that's a giveaway. Look at the joints, where the spout, handle, and lid meet. Real pots often have tiny "imperfections" like fine water‑marks or small iron spots, that's the mark of natural clay and handwork. Fakes are either unnaturally flawless, or have stiff, forced marks that look obviously artificial.

  1. The ultimate test, time and use.

After you brew tea in a real pot for a while, it slowly absorbs the tea oils. The surface becomes more lustrous, the colour deepens, and the feel gets smoother and more satisfying, that's the famous "patina." A fake pot won't change at all, it stays dull and dry. And if you come across one that's been coated with an artificial "patina," it'll feel sticky and greasy, and might even rub off colour on a cloth, steer clear.
