Born in 1946 in Dingshu Town, Yixing, Jiangsu Province, Tang Minggao began his career in 1979 at Yixing Art Ceramics Factory and later joined Jiangsu Provincial Ceramics Research Institute.
He studied under several renowned masters, including Gu Luzhou (brother of the celebrated potter Gu Jingzhou), Mao Longji, and Pan Chunfang. During his studies at Nanjing University of the Arts, he also received guidance from professors such as Zhang Xiangshui, Chen Dayu, Li Changbai, and Wu Shan.

In the 1970s, Tang established connections with master potter Gu Jingzhou, as well as Shanghai-based painting masters Tang Yun, Lu Yanshao, and Weng Kaiyun, maintaining long-term exchanges and often learning from their expertise.
Later, he further enriched his artistic practice by working with and learning from masters who studied abroad in the 1930s, such as Zheng Ke and Zhou Qingding, as well as renowned sculptor Zhou Guozhen. Through extended periods of apprenticeship, sketching, and creative collaboration with these artists, Tang gained profound insights and inspiration for his own work.
