For beginners, purple clay (zini) is the top recommendation. Depending on your usual tea preferences and maintenance commitment, you may then consider red clay (zhuni) or  duanni as a second step.

1. First Choice: Purple Clay (Zini) – The All-Rounder for Beginners

Why choose it:
Zini is the "basic model" of Zisha teapots, offering the highest margin for error. It is abundantly available, highly stable (withstands temperature changes well and resists cracking), and has moderate breathability. It pairs easily with most tea types, such as Pu'er, black tea, and oolong, making it a versatile choice. Zini develops a patina quickly and is simple to maintain, giving beginners a satisfying sense of achievement early on.

Recommended subtypes:

  • Qingshuini 清水泥(clear water clay): good value, pure texture

  • dicaoqing 底槽青,(Easy to patina)dicaoqing teapot

Recommended capacity:
80 ml – 120 ml (ideal for solo gongfu tea sessions)

Recommended shapes:
Xishi, Shipiao, Fanggu shapes.

2. Advanced Choice: Red Clay (Zhuni), For Aromatic Teas

Why choose it:
Zhuni has a fine, dense texture and excels at retaining and amplifying aroma, making it perfect for highly fragrant teas like Tieguanyin, Phoenix Dancong, and rock oolongs. Its small, delicate forms (60 ml – 100 ml) suit single, serving brewing.

Cautions:

  • High shrinkage rate ,extremely prone to cracking from sudden temperature changes. Always warm the pot before use in autumn and winter. (In our Yixing studio, winters get very cold. If we don’t preheat the zhuni teapots with warm water, we occasionally run into minor cracking caused by thermal shock.)

  • Low breathability ,dedicate one pot to one tea type. Avoid mixing with heavily fermented teas (e.g., ripe Pu'er, black tea) to prevent flavor cross-contamination.
Best for those who are patient, drink aromatic teas exclusively, and don't mind extra care.

3. Advanced Choice: Duanni, For Light, Fresh Teas

Why choose it:
Duanni offers excellent breathability and quick heat dissipation, which preserves the fresh, crisp character of light teas such as green tea, new white tea, and raw Pu'er. The pot also grows more lustrous with use.

Cautions:

  • Light-colored clay ,easily stained by dark tea pigments (e.g., ripe Pu'er, black tea). Brewing dark teas may leave stubborn stains. Dedicate one pot to one tea type and clean promptly after each use.

  • Patina develops slowly.
Ideal for those who enjoy light brews and value a pale, elegant tea table aesthetic.

Smart Buying Tips for Beginners

  • Don't chase rare clays (like "Dahongpao" or "Tianqingni") or overpriced collector's pieces when starting out.

  • Begin with a basic zini teapot, build hands-on experience, and only then explore other clays based on your evolving tea-drinking habits.
