What Is a Xishi Teapot?

The Xishi teapot is a classic Yixing teapot shape. Its form is round and full, inspired by the shape of a woman’s breast. This design first appeared in ancient China during the Ming Dynasty 明朝(1368-1644). According to ancient texts, it was created by the Ming Dynasty artist Xu Youquan 徐友泉. The spout is short and fits snugly against the rounded body of the teapot. The handle, commonly known as the “inverted handle,” is traditionally wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, but in this design it is reversed, narrower at the top and wider at the bottom,to better match the teapot’s silhouette.

Why Is the Xishi Teapot So Popular?

The Xishi teapot is popular for several reasons:

  1. Its shape is round, elegant, and adorable.

  2. It is highly practical, the spherical body allows tea leaves to unfurl fully, enhancing the tea’s flavor.

  3. It suits a wide variety of teas, especially Dancong, Wuyi Rock Tea, Tieguanyin, Sheng Puer, and Shu Puer.

What Size Xishi Teapot Should You Buy?

Before choosing a Xishi teapot, consider the following:

  • What types of tea do you often drink? Are the tea leaves large, medium, or small?

  • Do you brew tea alone, or with two or three people?

  • Do you use a fairness pitcher (gongdao bei) when brewing tea?

If you do not use a fairness pitcher, usually drink tea alone, and prefer small to medium-sized tea leaves, you can choose a Xishi teapot smaller than 120ml. If you use a fairness pitcher, enjoy tea with two or three friends, and use larger tea leaves, you can choose a larger Xishi teapot (120ml or more).

How to Judge a Quality Xishi Teapot?

  • Texture: Run your hand over a high-quality Xishi Yixing teapot. Its surface will have a slightly matte, grainy texture. You can easily tell it apart from ceramic or glass.

  • Smell: A high-quality Xishi teapot has no chemical odor. It is almost odorless, or has only a faint, natural earthy smell.

  • Craftsmanship: Rotate the lid. It should fit snugly against the body and open easily.

  • Aesthetic Lines: A high-quality Xishi teapot has smooth, graceful lines that are pleasing to the eye. The flush-cut lid craftsmanship of the Xishi teapot is key to determining its quality. The lid and the body of the teapot must seamlessly integrate to form a perfect spherical or oblate spherical shape.

  • Condition: Check all parts. A high-quality Xishi teapot has no cracks, chips, or dents.

  • Balance: A high-quality Xishi teapot is ergonomic, with the spout and handle well-proportioned, making it comfortable to hold.

Zhuni vs. Hongni Xishi Teapots

A Zhuni Xishi teapot has higher density and can better enhance the aroma of tea, making it especially suitable for highly aromatic teas. A Hongni Xishi teapot has a more porous structure, which allows tea leaves to unfurl fully, reduces bitterness, and brings out the tea’s sweetness (hui gan).
