What is dicaoqing

Dicaoqing

Dicaoqing is an outstanding variety of zini (purple clay) within the zisha clay family. It is sourced from the Huanglongshan mining area in Yixing, Jiangsu (especially the famed No. 4 Shaft), and is found at the very bottom of the purple clay seam.

Origin and Formation
Under the long-term pressure of the overlying rock layers and the constant infiltration of groundwater, the mineral structure of dicaoqing has been compacted to an exceptionally dense and pure state.

Raw Ore Appearance
The raw ore appears as purplish-brown, dense lumps as hard as stone. Its most distinctive identifying feature is the presence of bluish-green or greyish-green speckles scattered on the surface, commonly called “chicken eyes” or “cat eyes.” These speckles are actually naturally intergrown particles of local green clay (Benshan Lüni), nature’s own signature on dicaoqing.

Firing Characteristics
After firing, the clay body takes on a purplish-red, liver-brown, or purplish hue tinged with a subtle green-grey cast. The original “chicken eyes” transform into golden sand-like granules, glimmering faintly across the surface of the teapot and creating a distinctive visual effect known as “fleeting gold amidst the clay.”

Practical Performance
In terms of practical performance, dicaoqing possesses an outstanding dual-pore structure, giving it exceptionally high porosity among zisha clays, which allows it to fully draw out the fragrance of tea. With a low shrinkage rate, excellent firing stability, and remarkable resistance to deformation, it preserves the pot’s form perfectly. Through daily use and tea nurturing, it develops a patina quickly and gradually reveals a warm, jade-like luster.

Why It Is Prized
It is precisely because of its scarcity, unique texture, and great practical value that dicaoqing has long been highly esteemed by master potters. Today, Siyutao maintains long-term reserves of high-quality dicaoqing raw ore, keeping this coveted material within reach for discerning collectors and tea lovers alike.
