Born in Yixing in 1955, he joined the Yixing Purple Clay Craft Factory in 1973, where he studied under Gao Hongying and Shu Fengying. From 1976 to 1981, he successively apprenticed with Xu Chengquan, Shu Fengying, and Gao Lijuan, training apprentice artisans. Later, he entered the Research Institute and apprenticed under Master of Arts and Crafts Wang Yinxian. He has been engaged in the creative design of purple clay teapot art for over forty years. During this time, he has collaborated with Professor Pan Chunfang from Nanjing University of the Arts, Professor Zhang Shouzhi from the Central Academy of Arts & Design (now Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University), and Master of Arts and Crafts Han Meilin.

His works have been collected twice by the Purple Light Pavilion in Zhongnanhai and have received many awards in national and provincial competitions. He has been featured in reports by China Central Television (CCTV), Xinhua Daily, Jiangnan Times, and Yixing Daily. Ding Hongshun inherits the style and legacy of his mentors, dedicating himself to the steady creation of new works. His pieces are highly praised by teapot enthusiasts and experts both at home and abroad for their unadorned purple clay forms and distinctive stylistic qualities.

During his tenure at the factory, he consistently served as a technical instructor for young artisans, cultivating many skilled talents in purple clay art. To date, he has mentored over 150 apprentices, contributing significantly to the cultivation and continuation of the purple clay tradition.
