Born in 1964 in Yixing, Jiangsu, Xu Yuanming (徐元明) began his artistic journey in 1981. He apprenticed under the renowned master Xu Hantang, specializing in traditional hand-building techniques and design. Over the years, he has dedicated himself to studying and innovating upon diverse forms of clay teapot artistry, constantly pursuing creative evolution. His works have received numerous awards and have been featured in major exhibitions.

In 1986, he received the Wuxi Craft Design Excellence Award. By 1988, he was mentoring trainees in craft workshops while furthering his studies in design at the Central Academy of Arts and Design. In 2000, he was honored as an “Outstanding Mid-Career Clay Teapot Artist” by China’s National Arts and Crafts Council. By 2002, he was recognized as one of the “Ten Most Notable Clay Teapot Artists” by Beijing Treasure Garden.

Since 2010, he has served as an instructor in clay teapot design for professional technicians in Jiangsu and as an adjunct professor at Nanjing Normal University, also teaching form and mapping techniques to intermediate and senior professionals. Today, he is regarded as one of the leading figures in contemporary clay teapot art.
