Born in Yixing, Jiangsu, in 1959, Chen Hongping began working in zisha (purple clay) in 1982. In 1993, he pursued further studies in the Department of Ceramics at the Central Academy of Arts and Design. He currently creates zisha ceramic art at the Yixing Zisha Craft Factory. Chen Hongping has comprehensive zisha skills and a solid foundation. He excels in plain round and square wares, ribbed/veined wares, and flower wares. He is especially skilled at distilling tradition, and his works are imbued with a contemporary flavor. He has participated in the creation of literati teapots with famous calligraphers and painters of the Shanghai School, Tianjin School, and others.
His works have won Third Prize in the 5th National Ceramic Art Design and Creation Competition; First Prize at the China Porcelain Capital Jingdezhen International Ceramic Art Festival (1997); Gold Award at the China East China Arts and Crafts Fine Works Exhibition (2002); Gold Awards at the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 15th, and 16th China Arts and Crafts Master Fine Works Expositions; and Gold Awards at the 2009 and 2012 Art Expo Cup competitions, among dozens of major awards. His works have been collected by many art institutions, including the Central Academy of Arts and Design, the China National Arts and Crafts Museum, the Capital Museum, and the Jilin Provincial Museum. In 2015, he organized the “Purple Jade and Ink Rhyme: Tianjin Calligraphy and Painting and Yixing Zisha Art Joint Exhibition” at the Capital Museum.
